i've been reading up on recent rulings of human rights violations in nova scotia, and the awards that have been given to victims in the last few years.
something that i've noticed is that the two common violations are always matters of race, or sex.
nowhere did i see someone who was the victim of religious discrimination (except a minister who wasn't permitted to use a town facility for preaching, btw he was awarded $6,000).

I remember now, it was the bashing thread, where people were saying that it was wrong to bash religion and likened it to bashing people on the basis of race, sexual orientation, etc. and people said no, its not the same as it is chosen rather than hereditary.

I thought I recall that the consensus on this board was that religious discrimination did not rise to the level of racial or sexual discrimination as one chooses one's religion where race and sex are not chosen, but I could be wrong.
it seems that when a person leaves jw's, there's just no telling where he'll end up spiritually.
christian, jew, pagan, jamesthomasism -- i dare say every faith is represented among us.. but there are those that reject faith altogether.
they are often accused of letting the watchtower steal god from them, or throwing the baby out with the bath.. are you one those that rejected faith altogether after your exit?

Then you misunderstand the point that was being made if you think it was simply made to promote a belief in some supernatural entity. At the outset this thread was not meant to be a do you believe in God thread, but whether you had faith in anything outside of yourself. The point was that we have faith in many things, so that having "faith" is not irrational.

Those comments prompted my question about love, contrary to what anyone would like to believe, love cannot be proven with a capital P, it can be inferred, it can be assumed but in no way is there a scientific method of PROVING that someone loves you, ergo, you go on faith. The point I was trying to make is that we humans operated on faith in many ways, in the mundane things as Doogie pointed out with his remote to basing our life on the faith that our significant other truly loves us and wants to spend their life with us, to things that science tells us that we as individuals can't verify (ie. I believe in the theory of relativity but the maths to prove it are far beyond my reach) so I take it on faith.
So the point is and was that faith is with us in many ways, and that if we only believe that which we ourselves can prove or verify we won't be believing in much. The question regarding love was not to make faith in a god appear more rational, but to illustrate that we operate on faith on many levels, both in our secular life and for those of us that have a spiritual life. If someone wants to see that as rational or irrational that's up to them.

And what's the difference between civil marriage and "regular" marriage? Personally, I don't think we should be legislating marriage, period. It's an agreement between two people, a contract.

The difference as I see it, that is the difference between a civil marriage and a regular marriage as you put it is that one is the more traditional man-woman union and has religious overtones, a civil union is simply a union between two people that is recognized by law. In my opinion this is how it should work, all of us married folk, whether gay or straight should have civil union licenses from the state which give us legal rights as couples, if we so choose we can have a ceremony at our church for the religious sanctioning of the union where we recieve some certificate or whatever from the church indicating that the marriage was sanctified based on that faith's beliefs. As I see it the government has no business in the religious aspect of marriage once so ever in a reverse type of church/government separation.
As you put it, marriage is an agreement between two people, or a contract, therefore it falls under contract/domestic law. The contract between two people is one of huge importance affecting everything from inheritence, insurance coverage, custody of children, pensions, etc. so it needs to be legislated as there is a lot at stake here from a public policy stand point.

Funky, you know I dig you. Unfortunately duty called and many others picked up the ball and ran with it better than I could have. I don't think you can put emotions in the same category as say, bone density in terms of being able to test for it or say that it is "real". None of us can climb into another person's head and know, truly know why they do what they do, we have faith when a person tells us that they love us that they do, and we look for signs that they do, but we can never truly know that they do, we take it on faith.
I think there are many things in this life we take on faith as the manifestations could be interpreted in so many different ways. Or let's even say the idea of marriage, you want to talk about a leap of faith, will you love me, care for me, in sickness and health, till death do us part? I'd say going into that deal takes a huge amount of faith.

yesterday i saw something i've never seen before.
a protestant church on the left side of the road has a sign saying it's their 50th anniversary.
there is a rc church right across the street.
At my wife's church (Roman Catholic) from time to time they have speakers from different denominations, Lutheran, Presbyterian, Baptist, etc. Being raised a JW I was like, wtf, I told the wife that wouldn't fly in the KH.

I can laugh about it until I look at the picture of the mother holding her child, as a parent that image just makes me want to vomit and beat the crap out of whatever twisted toilet-bug at Bethel who drew that abortion. Edited to add: I've got a sense of humor, even a dark one at times, but somethings just aren't funny, and the death of a child is at the top of that list.
